Review

Florence + the Machine’s latest album “Ceremonials” will drown you in epic-ness if you’re not careful. I made the mistake of trying to listen to it while working, and the other-worldliness of it all kept giving me visions of dancing around a fire in the woods (not a productive urge in the middle of a workday).

Florence + the Machine’s 12-track “Ceremonials” starts strong and ends strong, with Florence Welch’s ethereal pagan / Celtic / androgynous goddess voice soaring over intricate backup instrumentals that include a harp, a choir and, for all I know, a wood nymph and an angel playing on dueling pianos. Don’t expect too many sing-along tracks like “Dog Days” on “Lungs,” but be prepared to feel empowered and uplifted in spite of discerning approximately 70% of the lyrics.

Since my first distracted run-through, I’ve listened to the album several more times, liking it more each time.  My favorites were the relatively upbeat “Never Let Me Go” and “Leave My Body,” both of which provide welcome breaks in the lofty metaphor and subliminal vibe of the rest of the album. Thank you, Florence Welch, for bringing your brilliant brand of weird to pop music. Now it’s time to go dance in the woods.
