Bank of Ann Arbor is bringing R&B/hip-hop artist Mayor Hawthorne to Sonic Lunch this week for a live performance which has moved from Liberty Plaza to The Michigan Theater due to expected poor weather conditions. The Ann Arbor native and UMich graduate has been credited with launching a Motown Revival in today’s music culture. Pitchfork’s Patrick Sisson calls Hawthorne a “one-man soul studio” and he has been featured on NPR’s All Things Considered, recently in iSPY Magazine, and countless late night talk shows. Mayor Hawthorne’s modern twist to classic retro sounds is revealed in his latest album How Do You Do, featuring rapper Snoop Dogg in “Can’t Stop”. At 29-years old Hawthorne has audiences of all ages feeling his music as timeless classics.
At 11:30 a.m. indie-pop trio Lightning Love will open for Mayor Hawthorne. The local favorites are featured on next month’s cover of iSPY Magazine, which also sheds light on the release of their upcoming album. You can pick up the August issue on Monday. Sonic Lunch will be complimented with food and beverages provided by The Produce Station and Cafe Ambrosia.
